Originally named Mount St. Clare College, Ashford University was founded in 1918 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Clinton, Iowa. The school became The Franciscan University in 2002 until it was bought in 2005 by Bridgepoint Education, Inc. and changed its name to Ashford University.
