Goa University is the only University in the State of Goa and one of the renowned centres for higher education in the country. The University was established in the year 1985 around the nucleus of Centre for Post Graduate Instruction and Research of the University of Bombay in Goa. Goa University campus is located on the outskirts of Panaji, the capital city and spread over nearly 173 hectares on the Taleigao Plateau overlooking the scenic Zuari River joining the Arabian Sea. The 23 PG Departments and 2 Centres of studies offer academic programmes leading to master’s and Ph.D. degrees in various disciplines. In 2001, Goa University was accredited with a Four Star rating on a 5-point scale by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council). Its PG departments, over the years have developed excellent facilities for research. Seven of the Science Departments are currently supported by DST under FIST. Goa University has academic programmes in a wide range of subjects.
