University of Tsukuba | Japan
The University of Tsukuba in its present incarnation was founded more than 30 years ago, in October 1973, as an entirely new concept in university system design. However, the original institution on which it is based, the Tokyo University of Education, which was located in Tokyo, dates back 130 years to the Meiji era when Japan started its path to the modern age. Thus, the University of Tsukuba has the unique distinction of being a "young" university, yet having a long and distinguished history in the Japanese university system. The university is located in the center of Tsukuba Science City, and it grew simultaneously with the development of the city. The city is well known for its large concentration of advanced research institutions in many areas of science and technology, and the name "Tsukuba" has attained high international esteem for its multitude of research accomplishments. The University of Tsukuba is unique in many ways. Unlike other Japanese universities, the undergraduate education system is organized according to clusters of colleges and provides comprehensive support for a variety of extracurricular student activities and campus life. Research is given high priority, and all faculty members belong to graduate schools. As one of the major Japanese universities, it covers a wide spectrum of academic fields in which in-depth research and education are conducted
