The origin of Yanshan University can be traced back to the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) founded in 1920. In 1958, the Department of Heavy Machinery of HIT and its related specialties moved to the strategic industrial town of Fulaerji, Qiqihar in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province and was renamed the School of Heavy Machinery of HIT.
Yanshan University is located in the city of Qinhuangdao, just 260 kilometers away from Beijing. As one of the Class A tourist cities in China, Qinhuangdao is rich in tourism resources and has made tourism one of its pillar industries. The Great Wall stretches alongside the entire city. The scenic spots in Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan, Golden Beach, Nandaihe, Mt. Jieshishan, Tianma Lake, Mt. Beiniuding,and other areas have been developed in recent years.
