German is a world language with a culture that has had a profound international influence since the Middle Ages and which preserves its status as an important language for business and politics to this day. The study of German at Edinburgh covers not only the language, but also a broad range of literary and cultural topics. These include film, theatre, translation, politics and gender, Germany and Islam, East German studies, Brecht, the Third Reich and the Holocaust, German Romanticism, Goethe and Schiller, and medieval studies. The oral language practicals cover a wide range of stimulating up-to-date cultural and political topics. On this programme you will take an intensive language course, developing your professional speaking, presentation, writing and translation skills, and will engage with significant literary and cultural works from the Middle Ages to the present, as well as with films from the 1920s onwards. You will be taught by experienced and qualified language tutors and by scholars who are working at the cutting edge of research.
