Our practice-based, innovative BSc (Hons) Food and Nutrition degree will provide you with an integrated course focused on applied food science and technology from manufacturing and processing, analysis, quality and safety assessment, biotechnology and innovation in food product development. You will be also be able to explore several aspects of applied nutrition and its relation to human health and disease, the physiological, biochemical aspect of public health nutrition, dietary assessments and intervention, the legislation and policies for products quality and safety and its relation to health promotion. There will be opportunities to discover the complexities of the food chain, the demands and needs of today’s consumers globally and the controls and safety features that ensure the food we eat is of high quality, safe and nutritious.
You will be taught in our newly-opened £41 million Life Sciences building with state-of-the-art laboratories, nutritional sciences and dietetics laboratory facilities and teaching kitchen. Staff and guest speakers teaching the programme are experts and publish in their respective fields of food science and technology, nutrition and public health, dietetics, food safety and quality, biomedical and biological sciences and analytical chemistry.
Upon graduating, you have a varied array of global employment opportunities. The food and drink industry is the largest industry globally and food science graduates are needed across the food chain from raw material evaluation, manufacturing and processing through to final product analysis. You may also work as nutrition scientists to assess dietary requirements and give recommendations to promote healthy eating practices to individuals, industry and regulatory bodies. You could also progress to postgraduate study on programmes such as MSc Dietetics at Birmingham City University.
