Archaeology courses at Winchester combine a range of subjects from British, European and World Archaeology. Students can tailor their course to focus on a particular aspect of cultural, scientific or practical based Archaeology through their choice of pathway. The first academic year the course provides a sound understanding of the discipline which will enable students to explore a greater variety of specialised areas in subsequent years. These range from fieldwork training, scientific techniques and cultural studies to period based subjects from the Palaeolithic to the present day. As a student on Archaeology programmes within the Department of Archaeology, you are part of a community of approximately eight academic staff, 15 postgraduate research students studying for MPhil and PhD degrees, 30 Masters students and 120 undergraduate students taking BA and BSc degrees in Archaeology, Archaeological Practice and Ancient, Classical and Medieval Studies. You will be assigned a personal tutor on arrival and there will be administrative staff on-hand to ensure you are guided through the challenges of your course during your stay with us. There are plenty of opportunities to visit archaeological sites and get involved in departmental research, to help you explore your interest in Archaeology or prepare yourself for your future career. The Department currently runs field research projects in Barbados, Corsica, the Republic of Georgia, Egypt and Ethiopia as well as in the UK. Together with its commercial consultancy arm, ARCA, the Department is one of only two archaeology departments to be a Registered Archaeological Organisation (RAO) with the Institute for archaeologists (the professional representative body for UK archaeologists).
