What is justice? And how can this word be defined so that it can be understood by everyone? What can the average German manual worker believe in just as much as a farming family in Laos? What cultural factors need to be taken into account when it comes to the “question of rights”? The Globalization, Governance and Law course of study sets us the ambitious task of questioning and reformulating the rules of our co-existence. Is it just if we pay 100 Euros for a pair of shoes, when the people who make them only get a fraction of that sum in wages? Is it just if people are tortured and killed simply for their words and their opinions? As an encounter between different cultures, globalisation presents us with enormous challenges. On the one hand, global trade and exchanges of knowledge bring us ever closer together, whilst on the other, it is becoming ever more difficult to regulate responsibility at the global level. This is why we need people who are prepared to promote social justice, universal human rights and the institutions that protect them. For us, law is more than just a complex set of rules which each person simply uses to their own advantage. For us, it is an expression of the struggle for more justice. It is more than just a part of a national culture; it is a way to get international relations to a level where it is no longer simply a case of might is right. It is for this reason that we believe in international institutions. For us, they are the cornerstones of prosperity which is just, lasting peace and sustainable civilisational processes. We want to participate in the regulatory framework of the world and consolidate it with our skills and our work.
