A children’s nurse cares for children and young people of all ages, from a new born baby to an adolescent, and with a range of physical, emotional and mental health needs. The role is highly rewarding and can be challenging in today’s fast changing health care environment. Working as a member of a team with other healthcare professionals children’s nurses work in a variety of settings including hospitals, community clinics, specialised units or patients homes. Children’s nurses work closely with family members and carers to reduce the impact of being ill or in hospital. The content of the program includes theoretical modules in generic nursing and child field specific subjects; placements are carried out across the three years in a range of clinical areas such as hospitals, special care baby units, hospice, mental health services, community children’s nursing teams and specialised paediatric intensive care units in England.
