Keio is Japan’s oldest private university; founded by educational visionary Yukichi Fukuzawa. Keio University has five campuses in the greater Tokyo area. Mita is the main campus located in central Tokyo. Shinanomachi houses the medical school and university hospital. Hiyoshi is mainly for freshman and sophomore students. Yagami is devoted to science and technology. Shonan Fujisawa (SFC) specializes in non-traditional approaches to studies and research. In addition to nine undergraduate faculties and 11 graduate schools, the Keio system also includes seven affiliated elementary, junior high and senior high schools, as well as a high school in the US, the Keio Academy of New York. Keio also has three overseas offices, in New York, London and Seoul. Keio University Hospital is one of the largest and best known general hospitals in Japan and is also a prestigious teaching hospital. Established in 1920, it has over 1,000 beds, a cutting-edge laboratory, and research and medical information divisions. Keio has a proud history as Japan's very first private institution of higher learning, which dates back to the formation of a school for Dutch studies in 1858 in Edo (now Tokyo). Since the school's inception, the students of Keio have risen to the forefront of innovation in every imaginable academic field, emerging as social and economic leaders.
