ULB was founded in 1834, four years after the birth of Belgium. It has seven faculties, several institutes, and hospitals, as well as industrial and experimental centres in Brussels and Wallonia. Today it is set up on several sites and campuses in Brussels (Solbosch, Plaine, Erasmus) and in Wallonia (Charleroi, Treignes). Each year, almost 20,000 students – a quarter of whom are foreign students – come to build their future at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, in the heart of the capital of Europe. More than 100 nationalities are represented, making it a place where cultures, philosophies, and religions intermix. As a wide-ranging university that is extremely active at the European level, ULB has based its teaching and research on a long tradition of tolerance and defence of freedom. The Institute for European Studies at ULB is dedicated to education and research in the fields of the European economy, law, policy, culture, and history. Its international scope and location in Brussels, the seat of the European institutions, enables students to take many different courses given by professors from other universities within the framework of various international agreements. As a student at ULB, you will have the privilege of attending a university that is firmly established in Brussels. You will be able to enjoy a wide range of cultural activities (theatre, concerts, exhibitions), and take part in many sports at all levels. You need to prepare yourself for studying in French, as the majority of teaching takes place in French.
