The Division of Physiotherapy forms part of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences within the Faculty of Health Sciences at University of Cape Town (UCT). Candidates for the degree programme should be interested in human relationships and have a strong commitment to service within the field of healthcare. Students receive instruction in English, but will also be required to attain a basic degree of conversational proficiency in Xhosa and Afrikaans in order to enable students to communicate with patients who are unable to speak English. The duration of the Physiotherapy degree programme is normally four years. Students who by the middle of the first year have not met certain performance requirements are required to transfer to an Intervention Programme of one year, after which they return to the standard programme. Additional assistance is offered during the Intervention Programme. The degree in Physiotherapy leads to registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Physiotherapist.
