Prepare to succeed in the complex and evolving global dialogue of Indigenous art history and contemporary art practices. Combine studies in Native American culture, art history and museum studies, with extensive practical experience. Your studies will focus on First Nations art, Canadian art history, and European art practices from the 19th through 21st centuries. Gain a deeper knowledge of contemporary art practices, academic research, and learn to write formally and extensively about art. Choose from a selection of Native American Studies courses, which offer in-depth engagement with Aboriginal issues, and take art studio courses that provide first-hand understanding of art techniques and materials. Work extensively with the University's art collection of more than 14,000 objects, while learning to manage, conserve and curate artwork for exhibitions, collections and public programs. Come to understand and appreciate art from around the world and immerse yourself in the study and the conversation about culture and creativity. Your internship gives you an in-depth sense of the range of work and career possibilities outside of the classroom in the museum field while developing your experience beyond the art gallery and classroom.
